Famous Singers From Aberdeen

Famous Singers From Aberdeen

Here at Sing Lessons Aberdeen we like to inspire our students with stories of success and fame with singers originating here in Aberdeen. Here are a few of Aberdeen's most famous singers to aspire to!

Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox is a Scottish singer and songwriter with roots right here in Aberdeen. She gained huge attention, along with Dave Stewart, after forming the Eurythmics. With hits such as Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) she has become the female artist with the highest number of Brit Awards, including Best British Female Artist six times. She has recently released her sixth solo album, Nostalgia.

Seb Rochford (Polar Bear)

Seb Rochford is a drummer and the frontman of the band Polar Bear, and of course most importantly is from Aberdeen! Seb has had a long and extensive career working with a number of high profile musicians, from Pete Doherty to Brian Eno. The band, Polar Bear, started out as an experimental jazz band but the latest album throws genre tags away to create an exciting mash up of complex rhythms and electronic melodies. The band was nominated for a Mercury Music price for their second album, Held on the Tips of Fingers.

Emeli Sandé

Emeli Sandé rose to fame in 2011 with her single, Heaven. Whilst Sandé was born in Sunderland, she quickly moved to Alford in Aberdeenshire at the tender age of 4. She is a fantastic inspiration for all budding singers here in Aberdeen as she wrote her first song at age 11! At the age of 16, she turned down a record deal with Telstar to go to Glasgow University studying medicine. Her first few tracks were predominantly Hip-Hop but quickly gained attention with her single 'Heaven'. The soprano singer has since had 3 UK number-ones, won the Brit Awards Critic's Choice in 2012 and was nominated for another Brit Award the same year.

Eileen Hunter

Eileen Hunter is a jazz singer currently based in London but originating here in Aberdeen. Born into a musical family, with her Gradfather, Father and Brother all well known for their Scottish traditional music, she was bound to end up a successful singer herself. She signer her first record deal in 2003 and has released 2 albums to great critical acclaim with Jazz FM even signing one of them. She married her X-Factor winner husband, Steve Brookstein in Aberdeen in 2006.
